Keeping your mouth clean and healthy is just as important as taking care of your body. A good oral hygiene routine helps prevent bad breath, tooth decay, gum disease, and even serious health problems like heart disease and diabetes. If you have complex dental issues or need specialized care, an oral surgeon can provide expert treatment. Your mouth is full of bacteria, and if it’s not cleaned properly, those bacteria can cause infections that affect your entire body. By following a simple daily routine, you can keep your teeth strong, your gums healthy, and your smile bright.

Morning Routine

1. Rinse

Start your day by rinsing your mouth with water or a gentle mouthwash. This helps remove the bacteria and plaque that have built up overnight. Swish the liquid around your mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting it out. It refreshes your mouth and prepares your teeth for brushing.

2. Floss

Flossing is an important step that many people skip. It removes food particles and plaque between your teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach. Gently let the floss between your teeth and move it around each tooth in a “C” shape. Move it up and down to clean both sides and under the gumline. If you prefer, you can use a water flosser or interdental brushes to clean these areas effectively.

3. Clean Your Tongue

Your tongue holds a lot of bacteria that can cause bad breath. Use a tongue scraper or your toothbrush to clean it gently from back to front. Rinse the scraper or brush after every few strokes to keep it clean.

4. Brush

Brushing your teeth is the most important step in your morning routine. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush for at least two minutes, dividing your mouth into four parts: upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right. Spend about 30 seconds on each section, cleaning all surfaces, including the inner, outer, and chewing areas of your teeth.

Midday Routine

After lunch or snacks, rinse your mouth again with water or mouthwash to remove any leftover food particles. This quick step helps prevent bad breath and keeps your mouth fresh throughout the day.

Nighttime Routine

1. Floss

Before going to bed, start your routine by flossing. This removes food particles and plaque that have collected during the day. Clean gently between every tooth and along the gumline.

2. Clean Your Tongue

Scrape your tongue again to remove the white coating or buildup that can cause bad odour.

3. Brush

Brush your teeth for two full minutes using the same technique as in the morning. Make sure to reach the back molars and other hard-to-clean areas. Brushing at night is especially important because it removes the food and bacteria that could damage your teeth while you sleep.

4. Rinse

Finish your routine with mouthwash or a water rinse for about 30 seconds. This helps remove any remaining debris and keeps your breath fresh overnight.

Set Aside Just a Few Minutes a Day

Maintaining good oral hygiene doesn’t take long, just a few minutes in the morning and at night. A quick brush alone isn’t enough; you need to follow all the steps to keep your mouth truly clean and healthy.
